AIM
The areas of knowledge of Private International Law of the Universities Rovira i Virgili (Tarragona) and Lleida and the Notarial Association of Catalonia, are organizing in Barcelona, on the 11th and 12th of November, 2025, the I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE REVIEW OF REGULATION (EU) 650/2012 AFTER TEN YEARS OF APPLICATION.
Given that August 17, 2025 will mark ten years since the European Succession Regulation has been applicable in its entirety, the organizers consider that this important milestone would be a good opportunity to assess its implementation. The main purpose of this scientific meeting is to combine both the theoretical reflection, with the practical experience collected to date. Indeed, over the course of these ten years, countless researches and studies have been published on the Regulation, aiming to explain and interpret its provisions. At the same time, a significant - and growing - number of judicial and extrajudicial resolutions have been issued in its application.
In this regard, the Conference program aims to follow the structure of Regulation 650/2012, placing special emphasis on those aspects that, during these ten years, scholars and, above all, case law have mainly dealt with. Consequently, the sessions of the scientific meeting will be structured around the main thematic axes of the instrument:
- Scope.
- Definitions.
- Jurisdiction.
- Applicable law.
- Recognition, enforceability and enforcement of decisions and documents.
- European Certificate of Succession.
- Other complementary provisions.
In the analysis of all these topics of discussion, in addition to the presence of experts from the academic field, it is intended to have the prominent participation of legal operators, in particular, notaries who, due to their professional activity, are in almost daily contact with the provisions of the Regulation.
The I INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE REVIEW OF REGULATION (EU) 650/2012 AFTER TEN YEARS OF APPLICATION is part of the research project: "The review of Regulation 650/2012, in matters of succession: application assessment and proposals for amendments", which is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (reference PID2023-149454NB-I00) and whose principal investigators are Diana Marín Consarnau (University Rovira i Virgili) and Josep Maria Fontanellas Morell (University of Lleida). The duration of the project is four years (2024-2028) and this Conference is the first international scientific meeting planned in its report of activities, which must continue in the coming years.
